Bellaria Igea Marina

An ancient fishing village

Legend has it that the name Bellaria is due to an exclamation of Pope Gregory XII. In 1414 he was a guest of Carlo Malatesta and, looking out of the window of the palace, after having breathed the balsamic air coming from the sea and the green woods, he is said to have exclaimed with great relief: "Oh, what a beautiful air." thus giving its name to the locality. The name Igea Marinathe Greek goddess symbol of health and well-being, dates back to 1905 when its founder Vittorio Belli began the work of urbanization of the stretch of sand dunes.

Bellaria Igea Marina has become so since the early twentieth century one of the most important seaside resorts on the Adriaticfollowing the discovery of the therapeutic virtues of water and sea air. The first tourists, consisting of wealthy families, spent their holidays in the cottages rented from the fishermen who during the summer moved into wooden huts.

Beach

A pearl of rare beauty

For years, the beach and the sea of Bellaria Igea Marina have been assigned the Blue Flag and the Green flagtwo important international awards. The Blue Flag indicates the city's good performance with regard to various indicators: clean water, efficiency of purification, differentiated waste collection, care of street furniture, bicycle paths, presence of pedestrian zones and green areas as well as bathing facilities. The Green Flag is instead granted to child-friendly locations which boast spaces that give freedom to play, rooms and services that meet the needs of parents and children, but also sea water that allows children to play on the shore in total safety.

Because of these factors Bellaria Igea Marina has always been considered one of the most popular destinations of the Riviera Romagnola, with 7 km of beaches well equipped, clubs, bars, restaurants and many attractions not to be missed.
